Andrew K. Mandel, a fourth-year rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College, is the founder of the Tzedek Box (www.tzedekbox.org), a new ritual in service of the Jewish call for justice. Originally a seventh-grade English teacher in South Texas, Andrew spent 16 years designing the national leadership programming at Teach For America and earned his Ed.D. at Teachers College. In 2014, he co-founded Strong East Ramapo, a volunteer advocacy organization addressing educational inequity in his hometown. Seeking spiritual insight to pursue a more just world, Andrew entered rabbinical school in 2018 and has served as a pastoral intern at Union Temple, social justice intern at Orangetown Jewish Center, student pulpit rabbi at Temple Sinai of Newington, and adult educator through the Revolve community nationwide. He is now proud to serve Manhattan’s Central Synagogue. Andrew lives with his partner, Mozart, in Queens, and is uncle to two Brooklyn nephews.
